DIGOS CITY, Philippines—Police in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur, announced Saturday the arrest of a suspect in the kidnapping of a five-year-old girl there in 2005.
Senior Insp. Ferdinand Casiano, Kiblawan police chief, said Lolong Cansing, 25, married, a resident of Sitio Samyol Palac in Barangay Kimlawis, was arrested Friday after a series of operations on his suspected hideouts.
He said Cansing was part of a bandit group that took hostage a girl during a firefight with soldiers in July of 2005.
Aside from using the girl as a human shield to dissuade pursuing troops, Cansing also demanded the release of a relative in jail for murder.
The girl was eventually freed when the complainant against the jailed suspect—Limuro Cansing —issued an affidavit of desistance.
Casiano said the arrest of the suspected kidnapper proved that criminals cannot hide from the law forever.
