MANILA, Philippines - In a fellowship-caucus Wednesday night, the Liberal Party (LP) announced their candidate for Speaker of the House, incoming Quezon City 4th district Rep. Feliciano Belmonte.
What they didn't make public was their bet for Senate president. A source who attended the caucus told ABS-CBN News returning Senator Franklin Drilon is it.
"I'm available but at the end of the day, the senators will have to choose," Drilon told ABS-CBN News.
Presidential frontrunner Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and LP President Manuel "Mar" Roxas refused to comment.
But the LP source said Aquino himself was calling up allies Wednesday night to campaign for Drilon.
This was confirmed by a senator who received such a call from Aquino.
However, the LP will find it difficult to muster the 13 votes needed to elect a Senate president.
The LP has only four members in the incoming Senate: Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Ralph Recto, and Teofisto "TG" Guingona III.
